Getting Ready

We're getting everything ready for our new school year. Officially, D-Man won't start 1st grade until June 1st, but we are starting our new Core and math as soon as it gets here which should be early next week. Along with that, we'll re-energize handwriting and finish up our geography workbooks. I'm getting my schedules and binders ready so that we're all organized as soon as the boxes arrive. I'm also trying to get some spring cleaning in before we start. It's been nice to take a few months "off," but we're rearin' to go.

How does Essential Math look compared to EB?? I wish I knew about ES when we started!

Essential Math looks more like PM to me from the samples (haven't ordered it yet). EB was too fussy for me and too easy for D-Man. I only found out about it recently on the WTM forums. As soon as I saw the samples on Sinapore's site, I knew it would be better for us. I'll probably do most of it in a scribing fashion with C-Monster over the next year or so starting in June. I don't think he would do well going straight into Horizons K like D-Man did. He's ready for EM B, but I decided to quickly trot through EM A since we're not in any hurry.

Yeah, we did the same with EB. Just zipped through Book A. I worry too much about "missing" anything!! Moms worry too much!

I'm slowly calming down in that area. I just sat down the other night and crossed out a bunch of Horizons 1 for D-Man. He was very happy with my decision.

Where are you in Horizons 1? After all my agonizing, I decided to put off SM 1A for a few months. I rather wait to make sure she's ready for it developmentally, I guess. So I'm just letting her pick and choose what she wants with HM K book 2 - with some guidance from me. And starting HM 1 (book 1) and going lesson by lesson. Well, not doing every problem since it's a lot of review. But Julie is very excited that it's not "baby math" anymore!

We're on lesson 125 right now and doing about 10 lessons/week. It's still just too easy for him. However, because he has his addition/subtraction math facts down now, he gets the pages done quickly. I did cross out all of the word problems since we've aready done CWP1 and the problems were so much harder.

D-Man begged to start PM2A last week and then didn't like it because the beginning was review. He said, "Mom, this is easy, where's the hard stuff?" I think we'll power through all of the review next week and then he'll be good.

That's too funny because Julie also asks for "harder math"! HM K book 2 is still "baby math" as of this week.

When is D-Man going to be caught up, do you think? Meaning when will he be at stuff that's not so easy?

I have no idea when our curriculum will catch up to him. It seems like he's always a step ahead. I'm trying to fix that now by speeding through Horizons 1. I really think that I need to make a big jump with him, but I just don't feel completely comfortable with it. We'll see what happens when we get into PM2A/Horizons 2. If he's still way ahead, I'll have to rethink my plan.
